Common applications are for circuit board repair, engraving, and repair of small components, and for inspection of any small manufactured component.  Boom arms may also vary from a simple horizontal rod to a higher end system with a double arm rod containing a heavy counterweight on the end opposite the microscope head.  A spring loaded multi-segmented articulating arm is a handy feature and allows the viewing microscope head to be quickly moved over a large area or retracted completely out of the working area.
