Welcome to Boom Stand Microscope
What is a boom stand microscope?
This type of microscope consists of a stereoscopic microscope head mounted on a metal arm that swings over the working area. This arm is mounted to a vertical pole that goes into a solid base. Some types of the boom stand microscope have articulating arms that allow the stereoscopic microscope head to be pulled over the working area or retracted out of the way this can be helpful for doing tasks such as engraving, circuit board repair, or soldering. Other types of the boom stand microscope that are on the market consist of double horizontal arm types which provide added stability with the counter weight at the end of microscope head. These are ideal for photography applications since the microscope camera is not as susceptible to vibration and movement during the photography. A boom stand microscope is always going to have a stereoscopic head mounted to it.
What is a stereo microscope? A stereo microscope is a microscope with two eye pieces having individual eye paths to specimen. This allows a stereoscopic view of the specimen giving the user a three dimensional viewing of specimen. Prices on boom stand microscopes can vary depending on the type of stereo binocular heads that are used on the boom stand. The most inexpensive boom stand microscope would have a simple binocular microscope head with a magnification that is selectable on a turret. Common magnification are 10X and 30X power. This microscope head is relatively inexpensive compared to the higher price zoom microscope heads. A microscope head with zoom optics allows the microscope magnification to be changed as the zoom knob is turned.
This allows a greater ease of viewing as the specimen can be gradually increased in size or decreased in size according to the microscope user’s needs. Sometimes when viewing a microscope specimen, it is desired to see a slightly greater magnification and the zoom knob provides just what is needed. On a fix magnification head, this is not possible as the turret is rotated between a 1X objective or a 3X objective. There are other types of fixed magnification boom stand microscopes that have 20X/40X on the turret. They simply provide a different magnification but operate in the same way as the 1X/3X types. The zoom boom stand microscope is a much preferred type of microscope for most applications.
There are multiple types of a stereo zoom microscope that can be mounted on a boom stand. One version has a trinocular photography port that is useful for attaching cameras and photography equipment for digital video and digital still image capturing. Naturally, this type of trinocular photography microscope head would cost more than a head without such capability. A simple binocular zoom microscope head can capture an image if a digital microscope camera is inserted into one of the ocular openings. The ocular is the opening where the eye piece goes into. Simply remove one of the eyepieces, leaving an opening that the microscope camera can be inserted into. The main drawback is that photos cannot be taken at the same time the user is viewing through the microscope eye pieces. However, a microscopist on a budget often will select a binocular instead of a trinocular microscope head to lower the cost.
Some types of zoom microscope heads are more costly than others. For example, the ratio of zoom does vary from type to type. The lower cost boom stand microscope heads with zoom magnification have a lower zoom ratio. The lowest zoom ratio typically used for a boom microscope would be 7 to 35X. This corresponds to a 0.7 to 3.5X zoom stereo optical system multiplied by the magnification of a 10 power eye piece, giving a resultant 7-35x. If a user is willing to pay more money for better equipment, then a 7 to 45X zoom stereo microscope head for the boom stand may be selected. For certain applications, a high ratio zoom is preferred. This type of zoom optics allows a much greater range of magnifications without the need for changing the eye piece set to a higher power one. For example, the optics in a standard high zoom ratio microscope maybe 0.6X to 6.5X. This would correspond to 6 to 65 power final magnification utilizing the 10X eye pieces.
If one is in the market for a boom stand microscope, there are different types to consider. First, consider if one is interested in getting the trinocular photography port or using a simple binocular stereo microscope head. Next, the microscopist must consider if their budget allows them to get a higher price zoom microscope head or if they can only afford a fix magnification head. And finally, the type of boom stand must be considered. The simple boom stand is relatively light weight but will do the job. There are higher cost heavier boom stands with counter weights and double arms that add a premium to the cost of the microscope. And then there is the articulating boom stand microscope that allows easy retraction and pulling the stereo microscope head over the work area. All these factors must be considered when purchasing a boom stand microscope.
